Hear the letters

Tap a letter to hear how it sounds. These are the same recordings children hear in the app.

Coming soon

A book is on the way

Alongside the app, an Amharic Alphabet book is coming soon. Leave us a note and we'll tell you the day it's out.

Inside the app

Four ways to learn, all through play

Every activity uses the letter's real sound, and letters morph live from one to the next, so children connect what they see, hear and write.

Tracing the letter ሀ with a finger, guided by a glowing dot and a pointing hand.
1 · Trace

Write each letter with a finger

Glowing dots show the order of the strokes. A friendly hand points to where to begin, and the letter is spoken as it appears. Finish the letter and it celebrates with a jump and a spin.

  • Watch each letter morph live into the next one
  • Choose a colour, or a rainbow brush
  • Letters come in short sets of five or six
  • Progress is saved, so children pick up where they stopped
Letters that change live

Watch one letter morph into the next

When a child moves on, the letter on screen transforms into the next one right before their eyes. A stroke grows, a mark appears or disappears, or the shape turns, so children see how the letters of a family are built from each other.

Seeing ሰ become ሸ by adding one small line makes the whole family easier to remember.

The See and Pick quiz: a letter in a circle with four coloured sound buttons below.
2 · See and Pick

Look at the letter, find its sound

A letter appears in the circle. Children tap each speaker to listen, then choose the one that matches. Ten questions make a round, and each round ends with a small celebration.

Choosing a quiz: See and Pick or Hear and Pick.
3 · Hear and Pick

Listen first, then find the letter

The game says a sound, and children pick the letter that makes it. Practise one family at a time, or mix letters from every family for a real challenge.

Parents can switch any quiz to two answers instead of four for younger children.

A blank page to practise writing

Once a letter feels familiar, children can write it on their own, as many times as they like, in any colour. One tap clears the page.

How it works

A path that grows with your child

  1. 1

    Meet a family

The fidel is grouped into 7 families of letters that look alike. Children start with the first family and unlock the next.

  2. 2

    Trace a small set

Each family is split into sets of five or six letters, short enough to finish in one sitting.

  3. 3

    Check with a quiz

Short listening games test what stuck. Mistakes simply come back later for another try.

  4. 4

    Collect stars

Each family shows how many sets are done. Finishing the whole alphabet earns a big celebration.

The family select screen with seven family buttons.
Families unlock one at a time as children progress.

Hand-painted scenes

Learn the letters, discover Ethiopia

Every set takes place in front of a different illustrated landmark, so children see a little of Ethiopia as they learn its alphabet.
